DIY Built In Desk for Kid’s Bedroom

These shelves were a total DIY that we built on the desk that was already in this room. I can’t believe the different it made in here, I absolutely love how it turned out! Below you can see a photo of what it looked like before we started. There were a couple long shelves above the desk but those were already removed before I snapped that photo.

Before and Progress Photos

I started by purchasing 2 $35 bookcases from Target to get a base for the shelves. You could probably find very similar inexpensive ones from ikea too if you have one nearby. I do not so I found something comparable from target. We attached the frame to the studs in the walls to assure it was secure. I then added trim all around the shelves to give a more custom built in look, as seen in the 3rd photo above.

To finish the project I secured shiplap between the bookcases and crown moulding on the top. Then caulked every single seam and painted. I think eventually I will replace the hardware, they could use an upgrade but work just fine for now.

What paint color did you use?

This is a common question I get so I wanted to bold the title so you can find the information easier. This is Benjamin Moore Boothbay Gray in a Semi-gloss finish. I typically always choose eggshell finish but since I am using the paint on something like a desk, let alone in the kids bedroom, I went with semi-gloss because it’s easier to wipe clean.

These curtains are the best, I seriously have them all over my house. They’re a blackout curtain and lay so nicely. The color is a nice creamy white, I can’t recommend them enough! (shown is the color sour cream)

This was one of our bigger DIY projects to date and a great precursor to the entertainment center build I hope to tackle this fall. I will share all the links to everything in this post below. Thanks for following along!
